Field of View Angles for iPad/iPhone

In our popular app “EasyMeasure”, we use augmented reality to measure dimensions in the image feed to the iPhone/iPad camera. An important parameter in these measurements is the “Field of View” angle (FoV angle, or “angle of view”) of the camera lens. The picture below explains the concept.

Depending on the iPhone/iPad type, this FoV angle varies. For an accurate measurement or augmented reality implementation, it is required to use the correct FoV angles in the app. “EasyMeasure” automatically detects the device type, and sets the FoV angle.

The FoV angle information for the iPhone and iPad is scarce. Therefore, we decided to publish the FoV angles used in EasyMeasure, with the intention to start a discussion and come up with improved values from users that empirically determine the FoV of their device. The FoV values below are the vertical FoV angles (so corresponding to the long distance of the rectangular camera view) and are valid for the backward facing camera (i.e. not the FaceTime camera). • iPhone 1G and 3G: 49.356 degrees (based upon a resolution of 1200x1600 pixels, a focal length of 3.85mm and a vertical chip size of 3.538mm, ref)
  • iPhone 3Gs: 49.871 degrees (based upon a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, a focal length of 3.85mm and a vertical chip size of 3.58mm)
  • iPhone 4: 61.048 degrees (based upon a resolution of 2592x1936 pixels, a focal length of 3.85mm and a vertical chip size of 4.54mm, ref)
